The Indian offshoot of Britain's Vodafone completed a merger with Idea Cellular to become the country's biggest mobile phone company with more than 400 million customers. The new $23 billion Vodafone Idea giant deposes Bharti Airtel - with its 350 million subscribers - as India's top mobile firm.

Chinese telecommunications vendor Huawei has surpassed US behemoth Apple in worldwide smartphone sales for the first time ever. The news is a welcome boost for Huawei following the decision by the Australian government to ban them from bidding on forthcoming 5G contracts.

The Chinese government has stated that the decision by the Australian government to ban Huawei and ZTE for bidding on lucrative 5G infrastructure contracts would ultimately and inevitably have an impact on trade relations between the two countries.

The chairman of Chinese telecommunications behemoth ZTE has confirmed that it has resumed business following its US ban. The ban imposed by the US Department of Commerce crippled the company’s business operations and as a result of the draconian ban was pushed towards the brink of closure.
