The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recently announced the release of the first group of 5G spectrum bands – known as the “5G pioneer bands”- and will be assigned to multiple companies instead of a singular player, according to its Final Report on the allocation of spectrum bands.

The spectrum bands identified are 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26/28 GHz for the deployment of 5G in Malaysia, in light of the accelerated development of the 5G ecosystem in the region.

The MCMC reported that a small segment of the 700MHz and 3.5 GHz bands will be allocated through a tender process beginning in Q1 of 2020.

The report stated, “For the avoidance of doubt, MCMC has no preference in relation to the members of this consortium and will evaluate submissions received as per the tender process.”

MCMC further added, “The assignment for the above-mentioned spectrum bands will be made by way of apparatus assignment (AA). The MCMC anticipates that the appropriate spectrum fee through AA is more economical, and will encourage network deployment by the service provider.  Cost savings can be passed on to businesses and consumers to ensure a better value of affordable services.”
