CelcomDigi, a Malaysian telecommunications company, officially submitted a proposal on Wednesday to build Malaysia's second 5G network. Meanwhile, U Mobile, a rival telco, has signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), including a new financing deal, to strengthen its case to become the new 5G operator.

CelcomDigi stated that it has submitted a proposal to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for the deployment of Malaysia's second 5G network. The company believes it is best positioned to provide the most affordable, fast, and efficient rollout of the new 5G network.

CelcomDigi highlighted its wide 4G network encompassing 18,000 sites that are 5G-ready, as well as its extensive network of tower and infrastructure companies for quick deployment. The company also mentioned that over two-thirds of its network will be modernized by the end of the year.

In addition, CelcomDigi emphasized its service portfolio, which includes digital solutions powered by AI through its recently launched CelcomDigi AI Experience Centre (AiX) collaboration hub. The company also highlighted its ecosystem of global and local technology partners and the expertise of its shareholders, Axiata and Telenor, in driving innovation.

U Mobile is also vying to lead the construction of the second 5G network. The company has signed an MoU with AmBank Group for financing solutions to cover the costs of rolling out the network. U Mobile has been proactive in signing deals to position itself as a strong contender for the second network.

Recently, U Mobile teamed up with EDOTCO to accelerate its 5G rollout and is also collaborating with Enfrasys Solutions to trial private 5G in logistics operations.

Both CelcomDigi and U Mobile are competing to be the new 5G player. They have signed agreements to share network sites and develop use cases for 5G-Advanced.

The Malaysian government is expected to make a decision on the selection of an operator for the second 5G network by the end of the year.
