Bharti Airtel has unveiled the country's first AI-driven spam detection solution. The company claims that this innovative technology will greatly decrease the volume of spam calls and messages experienced by its network users.
The company announced in a press release that the solution is a first-of-its-kind offering from a telecom service provider in the country, and is designed to alert customers in real-time about suspected spam calls and SMS messages. It will be provided at no cost and will automatically be activated for all Airtel customers, requiring no service requests or app downloads.

Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and CEO of Bharti Airtel, noted that spam has become a significant issue for customers. He mentioned that the company has dedicated the past year to comprehensively addressing this problem. Vittal emphasized that the launch of the country’s first AI-powered spam detection solution marks a milestone and aims to protect customers from the ongoing barrage of intrusive and unwanted communications.
Bharti Airtel's spam detection solution features a dual-layer protection system, incorporating two filters: one at the network level and another at the IT systems level. According to Vittal, every call and SMS is processed through this AI-powered shield, which can handle 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls daily in just 2 milliseconds.
"This is equivalent to processing 1 trillion records on a real time basis using the power of AI. Our solution has been able to successfully identify 100 million potential spam calls and 3 million spam SMSs originating every day. For us, keeping our customers secure is a burning priority," Vittal concluded.
From a regulatory perspective, in response to growing concerns over spam calls and messages, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) introduced new rules in May 2023 aimed at curbing these issues. Additionally, starting in September, the TRAI will enforce a two-year telecom ban on spammers.
The TRAI is also consulting on a new telecom service framework under a forthcoming act, while the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has mandated telecom companies to block international spoofed calls using Indian numbers by May 2024.
