New Zealand’s largest telecom provider, Spark, has switched on the Pacific country’s first live 5G mobile test site in the capital city Wellington, with Minister of Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media, Hon. Clare Curran, becoming the first member of the public to run a 5G speed test achieving speeds of over 9Gbps.

Indonesia’s Telkomsel announces the successful commercial deployment of CloudAIR 2.0 solution in 2018 Mobile Word Congress (MWC 2018). This solution is the result of Telkomsel and Huawei’s Joint Innovation Center 2.0 (JIC2.0), aimed to reshape the air interface with the concept of cloudification and efficiently share the air interface resources such as spectrum, power and channel. The implementation of this solution will improve the air interface efficiency and enable operators to have more flexibility to deploy the networks and provide a better user experience.

3 Hong Kong, the mobile arm of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited and Huawei announced activation of the five components of carrier aggregation (5CC CA) technology this month to coincide with launch of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, the first handsets to support 5CC CA technology. This advanced cross-spectrum approach amounts to a significant milestone in 4.5G technology and heralds the next phase of the 5G era.

Philippines telecom provider Globe Telecom partnered with Huawei to commence the trial of the world's first FDD Massive MIMO commercial product. FDD Massive MIMO is expected to boost cell capacity by a factor of two to three times based on legacy terminals compared to the current LTE deployment. This enhancement in cell capacity will provide a better experience for more consumers.

A mobile hot-spot network featuring an extremely fast 1.25Gbps data transmission has been developed for public transportation systems by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in South Korea. A pilot project featuring the new technology in Seoul's subway lines will begin later this year.

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has collaborated with Japanese telecom provider NTT DOCOMO, Japanese commuter railway company Tobu Railway and Chinese ICT solutions provider Huawei to conduct 5G field trials in Tokyo Skytree Town, a modern commercial center in the Sumida District of Tokyo that was opened in May 2012.

Singapore’s leading telecommunications provider achieved a world first mobile peak speed with Ericsson on 12 February. Singtel achieved 1Gbps mobile peak speed on Ericsson’s quad-band FDD/TDD Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology. This will enable Singtel to optimize the usage of its newly acquired 2500 MHz spectrum band and enhance the consumer’s mobile experience.

Australian telecom provider Optus has announced its intention to commence the roll out of 5G technology in Australia by early 2019 with a fixed wireless product in key metro areas. This announcement follows the launch of a successful outdoor trial for 5G New Radio, which showed 2Gbps download speeds using a potential device for a fixed wireless service in the home and business.
