Four of the largest telecom providers in Malaysia have announced that they have signed an agreement with the country’s local regulator to make 5G service commercially available to their customers.

The long-sought deal now enables Digi Telecommunications, U Mobile, Telekom Malaysia and Celcom Axiata to access the 5G network by the state-run Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) for 10 years.

In a statement, Celcom said that during this introductory period, the company is waiving the 5G access fee for customers to enjoy 5G services as per their internet quota from their existing plans, until December 31, 2022.

In addition, Celcom customers with 5G-enabled devices will also be able to access various 5G Virtual Reality content as well as 5G roaming services in 14 countries.

Datuk Idham Nawawi, CEO of Celcom Axiata, said, “We are excited to support the nation’s digital aspirations and deliver 5G services to all Malaysian consumers and enterprises. Leveraging Celcom’s widest coverage, our customers will be able to enjoy services that are reliable with a consistent network performance. Celcom will continuously work with local and international technology partners towards the development of a diverse 5G ecosystem in Malaysia to develop and offer 5G Enterprise solutions across various industries.”

This announcement comes three weeks after Digi signed a conditional share subscription agreement to take a 12.5% equity stake in DNB. In a press release, Digi confirmed that it will subscribe to DNB’s 5G wholesale network for a period of 10 years to develop and offer end-customer retail services which include 5G connectivity.

Meanwhile, U Mobile announced that starting November 3 onwards, customers of U Mobile’s 5G-ready postpaid and prepaid plans will be able to enjoy the benefits of 5G connectivity when using compatible devices.

“U Mobile is supportive of the government’s vision of a single wholesale network for 5G deployment, whereby all operators will have access to the same network without differentiation in terms of speed and quality. Hence, we are delighted to have signed the 5G Access Agreement and be part of this network. We have full faith that DNB will honour the mandate of providing quality 5G coverage and capacity on an equitable and non-discriminatory basis,” said Wong Heang Tuck, CEO of U Mobile.

Telekom Malaysia, on its social media platforms, announced, “We at TM are proud to enable new digital capabilities through our commitment to equity. Our equity participation in DNB as a shareholder reflects our goals to enable the success of Malaysia's 5G aspirations.”

The company added that they recognize the limitless possibilities of 5G and they are investing to create new economic and digital opportunities that will put Malaysia on the map. TM also stated that they aspire to put these 5G technologies into the hands of all Malaysians, enabling progress for all.
