NEC Corporation has announced the completion and operation of the Patara-2 submarine cable system in Indonesia. This cable system is owned by Telkom Indonesia, the largest digital telecommunications company in the country, which is dedicated to accelerating digitalization in Indonesia. The Patara-2 submarine cable system is a high-speed optical fiber cable that spans approximately 1,200 kilometers. It has a capacity of 100 gigabits per second and consists of 80 wavelengths and two fiber pairs.
This new cable system improves connectivity between the cities of Waisai, Manokwari, and Supiori, complementing the existing Sulawesi Maluku Papua Cable System (SMPCS) and other cable systems provided by NEC in Indonesia. The Patara-2 and SMPCS cable systems create a redundant network configuration in the north of Papua, ensuring reliable communications in the region.
Telkom's Director of Network & IT Solutions, Herlan Wijanarko, stated that the Patara-2 and SMPCS cable systems greatly enhance connectivity in Papua. Meanwhile, the Managing Director of NEC's Submarine Network Division, Atsushi Kuwahara, expressed NEC's pride in contributing to the expansion of Indonesia's connectivity. NEC has been involved in numerous submarine cable projects for Telkom since 1991 and has laid over 10 submarine cable systems in the region.
