Huawei and China Unicom Beijing have launched a large-scale 5.5G pilot test network in Beijing to further advance network connectivity. The pilot test covered three key areas in the city, namely, Beijing Financial Street in the city center, the landmark Beijing Long Distance Call Building, and the multipurpose Workers' Stadium.

First-of-its-Kind Network

The inaugural 5.5G network is expected to establish new standards for future networks and applications in the country. It is also set to advance Beijing's digital economy forward, establishing it as a leader in technological innovation.

During the testing, the network achieved a 10Gbps downlink peak rate and a continuous experience of over 5Gbps, exceeding existing 5G networks by tenfold.

Furthermore, the 5.5G network achieved high- and low-band coordination, allowing for the seamless deployment of 5.5G equipment both indoors and outdoors. The versatility of this technology also allows for a wide range of applications, such as glasses-free 3D, ultra-high-definition (UHD) real-time broadcast systems, and emerging VR, AR, and extended reality (XR) applications.

Advancing the Telco Industry

Since the inception of 5G network construction in 2019, China Unicom Beijing and Huawei have collaborated on significant projects. Both companies have achieved milestones together, such as building gigabit hotspots and the biggest 200 MHz 5G urban network in the world. The award they received from the GSMA Global Mobile Awards reiterates how dedicated they are to building and running high-quality 5G networks.

5.5G technology promises faster data speeds, reduced latency, seamless streaming of high-definition content, real-time communication, and potential support for data-intensive applications such as augmented reality and virtual reality. Businesses can leverage these capabilities to drive innovation, improve productivity, and enhance customer experiences across various sectors, from healthcare and manufacturing to transportation and entertainment.

Moreover, 5.5G networks facilitate seamless integration with the Internet of Things (IoT), empowering the proliferation of smart cities, smart homes, and industrial IoT applications. The improved capacity and efficiency of 5.5G enable the simultaneous connectivity of a massive number of devices, enabling businesses and governments to collect and analyze vast amounts of data for informed decision-making and operational optimization. Additionally, the ultra-low latency of 5.5G supports edge computing, enabling real-time processing and analysis of data at the network edge for applications such as autonomous vehicles and smart infrastructure.

The successful launch of the 5.5G network symbolizes a significant advancement in the telco industry.  This also elevates Huawei, China Unicom Beijing and China as pioneers in the industry.
