Hitachi and NTT Communications Corporation have successfully demonstrated a distributed data center infrastructure, confirming its technical feasibility.

The infrastructure combines Hitachi's Virtual Storage Platform One Block (VSP One Block) and the IOWN All-Photonics Network (APN) developed by the NTT Group. VSP One Block is a storage solution that uses virtualization to manage multiple storage units as a single entity, ensuring business continuity during disasters.

System Recovery During Disaster

The IOWN APN is a network technology that offers low power consumption, high capacity, low latency, and high-quality communication. During the demonstration, the combination of VSP One Block and IOWN APN achieved fast data synchronization over long distances, confirming the possibility of seamless system recovery even during disasters. The demonstration connected two VSP One Block storage systems using an IOWN APN, simulating a separation of 600 km.

The network's superior latency and reduced jitter resulted in a round-trip response time that exceeded expectations, confirming stable data synchronization over such distances. The demonstration also showed that system recovery following a disaster can be achieved seamlessly, with automatic restoration of full system availability at the backup site without data loss. This eliminates the need for manual intervention by system engineers, reducing the workload and costs associated with maintaining multiple data sets.

Sustainability at the Forefront

The collaboration between Hitachi and NTT Com in this demonstration showcased the potential of distributed data centers in enhancing business continuity and reducing environmental impact. Moving forward, Hitachi and NTT Com aim to deliver next-generation IT infrastructure capable of real-time data synchronization over long distances to support mission-critical industries.
