Malaysian operator Maxis has announced that it will sign an access agreement with state 5G wholesaler Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) in order to advance the country's 5G rollout and stay competitive with rivals who have already signed similar agreements.
In a stock exchange filing, Maxis confirmed that it will sign the agreement to commercially launch 5G services. Maxis was the last incumbent operator to join the controversial state 5G strategy, which allows all operators to access the same network.
The next steps involve obtaining shareholder approval for the deal at the operator's next extraordinary general meeting in Q3 of this year and then launching 5G services shortly after.
Maxis has stated that it expects to incur operating expenses of approximately MYR360 million (US$79 million) per year for access to DNB’s wholesale network product.
