Singtel has partnered with Starlink to improve its maritime digital offerings, which will encourage ship owners and operators to adopt cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), 5G wireless networks, edge computing, and cloud-based solutions.

The addition of Starlink's low Earth orbit (LEO) internet service to Singtel's comprehensive portfolio of digital smart solutions for vessels, known as iSHIP, will expand Singtel’s maritime coverage, which is expected to revolutionize the maritime sector through the provision of improved connectivity and reduced latency. The ability of ship operators to analyze real-time data will facilitate enhanced operational maintenance, will result in cost savings in petroleum consumption, and will increase productivity.

“The maritime industry is a complex, interconnected environment involving large volumes of data being transmitted between thousands of terminals, ships, and ports across the world. As the first telco in Singapore to offer Starlink, we are confident that this offering will further facilitate the development of smart, secure, and sustainable solutions that will positively impact the industry,” said Bill Chang, Chief Executive Officer, Digital InfraCo, Singtel.

Redefining the Maritime Industry

Starlink’s LEO technology, composed of over 5,000 satellites will augment Singtel's iSHIP platform with speeds of up to 220 Mbps. This will provide vessels with end-to-end, high-speed connectivity that elevates safety and security measures, reduces expenses, and increases operational efficiencies.

Additionally, Singtel's iSHIP includes the Paragon platform— an all-in-one orchestration platform for 5G edge computing and cloud services— which will oversee and orchestrate intelligent service switching among satellite communication providers. This practice guarantees continuous, superior, network coverage throughout the extensive journeys of vessels, encompassing remote areas and difficult surroundings. The platform will also empower vessels to use edge computing by allowing them to host mission-critical applications either on-shore or on-premises, thus increasing uptime and freeing up bandwidth.

Singtel's initiative to incorporate Starlink into its iSHIP platform shows its commitment to modernizing the maritime industry through hyperconnectivity and innovative digital technologies.
