Globe Telecom Inc. announced that it has bolstered its measures to counter cyber threats by blocking and disabling additional SIM cards involved in malicious behavior.
During the initial quarter of 2024, the corporation observed a remarkable 62% surge in the number of SIM cards from competing networks that were blacklisted, in comparison to the corresponding period in the previous year.
In the first quarter of 2024, the telecommunications giant deactivated 36,549 SIM cards from rival networks, marking an increase from 22,455 during the same period in 2023.
Globe's Chief Information Security Officer, Anton Reynaldo Bonifacio, noted that this surge underscores Globe's heightened efforts to combat problematic SIM cards engaged in SMS spam, online fraud, and other unlawful activities.
Additionally, Globe deactivated 841 of its own SIM cards in the first quarter due to suspected involvement in spam or scam SMS activities, marking a 30% increase from the previous year's numbers.
“We have zero tolerance for abusive SIMs that undermine network security and compromise customer experience. Our accelerated deactivation efforts demonstrate our unwavering resolve to fight these cybersecurity threats head-on,” Bonifacio said.
Combatting Malicious SIM Cards
Bonifacio emphasized that Globe utilizes advanced monitoring systems and depends on customer reports through its ‘Stop Spam’ portal to promptly identify cases of SIM abuse. Upon detection, the company swiftly deactivates these SIM cards to safeguard its customers and maintain service quality.
In light of the risks associated with compromised SIM cards, Bonifacio emphasized the importance of customer vigilance, advising against clicking on unfamiliar links, sharing personal information, or divulging one-time PINs.
He urged customers to promptly report suspected spam or scam messages through the ‘Stop Spam’ portal. Additionally, Globe collaborates with law enforcement agencies like the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group to crack down on fraudsters.
Bonifacio also stressed that cybersecurity requires continual effort and investment to stay ahead of evolving threats. He reaffirmed Globe's commitment to providing a secure and worry-free experience for its customers through the intensified deactivation of rogue SIMs.
