HKT has been granted regulatory approval to cease its 2G network services on November 8, noting declining demand as the official reasoning behind the decision.
Spectrum resources allocated for 2G will be reallocated to bolster advanced mobile services, aiming to improve network quality for its customer base.

The Communications Authority approved HKT's discontinuation of 2G services following the operator's commitment to assisting affected customers by offering handset replacements.
Until its termination on November 8, current 2G services will continue to operate normally. HKT has been actively encouraging individual customers to upgrade their 2G mobile phones or devices since the last quarter of 2022, aiming for a smooth transition to advanced mobile services.
The company will persist in aiding affected customers with the upgrade of their 2G mobile phones, devices, or SIM cards, while also making appropriate arrangements for those opting not to upgrade.

HKT stated that spectrum from the 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands will be repurposed to bolster 5G and advanced network expansion.
