Solar Implementation

One of M1’s key efforts includes making its base transceiver stations (BTS) more eco-friendly by installing solar panels and using smart network management technology to lower energy consumption during low traffic periods.

By adding solar panels to eight BTS sites in Singapore, M1 has already seen a 20% reduction in electricity usage at each site, which is equivalent to saving about 4,800 kWh per year per site.

This move towards using solar power is part of M1's goal to rely less on non-renewable energy sources and promote a more sustainable telecommunications sector. The company plans to install solar panels at ten more sites by 2025 and will continue to explore green technology options to increase their use of renewable energy.

Smart Network Management

Additionally, M1 has conducted a pilot trial for smart network management technology, which adjusts power usage based on real-time traffic conditions to reduce energy consumption during low traffic periods. This technology has the potential to save up to 300,000 kWh per year across M1's network and has already been implemented in their 4G network as of July 2024.

Denis Seek, M1's Chief Technical Officer, emphasized the importance of integrating innovative solutions like smart network management and renewable energy sources to create a more environmentally friendly telecommunications industry.

M1 is committed to reducing their environmental impact and promoting sustainable growth through these initiatives.
