Viettel has launched its Open RAN (O-RAN) 5G Network, using equipment developed in-house and 5G RAN platforms developed by Qualcomm Technologies.
Viettel's O-RAN Massive MIMO 5G Networks are now live, offering high speed and capacity for mobile subscribers in Vietnam. By Q1 2025, over 300 sites will be deployed in various Vietnamese provinces, with thousands more planned for nationwide and international deployment. This makes Viettel a key player in the O-RAN community and one of the largest carriers to launch a commercial O-RAN network.

O-RAN at the Forefront
The deployment uses Qualcomm's X100 5G RAN Platform for vDUs, the QRU100 5G RAN Platform for Massive MIMO Radio Units, and Qualcomm’s Edgewise Suite for RAN Management. Initial gNodeBs in the Ha Noi and Ha Nam provinces have shown strong performance, demonstrating the benefits of O-RAN technology.
Viettel's DUs use inline accelerators to reduce baseband processing tasks, cutting costs and improving power efficiency. The RUs support O-RAN-compliant 32TR Massive MIMO capabilities, enhancing network capacity and energy efficiency. The collaboration between Viettel and Qualcomm Technologies has led to a successful commercial O-RAN deployment, showcasing innovation and dedication. Viettel's collaboration with Qualcomm also includes premium RAN automation, management, and orchestration solutions.
This partnership simplifies network management, reduces costs, and aids in network modernization. The 5G Open RAN commercialization completes Viettel's end-to-end 5G product suite, catering to public and private network needs and fostering a sustainable vendor ecosystem. Nguyen Vu Ha, CEO of Viettel High Tech, praised the collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies for accelerating 5G commercialization.
Durga Malladi, SVP & GM of Qualcomm Technologies, acknowledged the milestone of launching the first commercial O-RAN network and the commitment to driving innovation in the telecommunications industry. Julian Gorman, Head of Asia Pacific at GSMA, commended Viettel and Qualcomm Technologies for their leadership in advancing connectivity through Open RAN technology.
