KT has announced plans to implement Ciena's WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) technology to meet growing customer demand for services exceeding 400 GbE.

This follows a successful trial through which KT achieved data transmission speeds of 1.2 Tbps on its long-distance Seoul-Busan route and 1.6 Tbps on its medium-distance Seoul-Cheonan route.

Through the integration of WL6e, KT anticipates a 2.6-fold increase in data transmission speeds between metropolitan data centers and a potential doubling of its nationwide backbone network speeds.

Designed for high-capacity, low-latency transport, WL6e is well-suited to next-generation routing and AI-driven, real-time processing needs, helping KT keep pace with rising bandwidth demands. Combined with Ciena's Navigator Network Control Suite, the technology will enable KT to optimize its multi-layer network through automation, improving the speed and flexibility of its service offerings.

KT will, reportedly, implement WL6e onto its nationwide backbone network in the first half of 2025.

“We’ve been working closely with KT to reach connectivity highs in South Korea, achieving the first 600G transmission route last year, and set to deliver 1.2 Tbps nationwide with WL6e. The upgrade to KT’s network will provide the needed boost to support the upcoming acceleration of AI-driven network traffic and digital transformation in Korea,” said Henry Kim, Regional Managing Director, North Asia, Ciena.
