Reliance Jio has launched its 5G-based fixed wireless access (FWA) service, called JioAirFiber, in eight cities in India: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.
Chairman Akash Ambani said, “Our extensive fiber-to-the-home service, JioFiber, already serves over 10 million customers, with hundreds of thousands more getting connected each month. But there are still millions of homes and small businesses to be connected at a rapid pace."
Jio claimed that its optical fiber network spans more than 1.5 million kilometers throughout India, putting it in close proximity to more than 200 million locations. However, fiber to the premises, often known as a last-mile connection, might be difficult for optical fiber. Thus, JioAirFiber will leverage 5G to wirelessly provide services like entertainment, smart home technology and broadband to millions of households.
Jio has introduced FWA plans in two categories: AirFiber and AirFiber Max. All JioAirFiber plans are available in six- and 12-month options, while JioAirFiber Max will be initially available in selected areas only.
Jio will provide a Wi-Fi router for residential or business coverage, a 4K smart set-top box and a voice-activated remote at no extra cost when the consumer selects one of two initial categories.
5G FWA appears to be capable of meeting the connection needs of cloud PCs, security and surveillance, smart homes, IoT and other applications, in addition to entertainment.
