The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has published what it says is the first of a series of reports on the Evolution to Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT).
The document, which will be updated quarterly, reports on the progress of NB-IoT in the 3GPP standards body and covers global trials and commercial roll out of this industry changing technology.
GSA says: 'NB-IoT will become one of the dominant 3GPP technologies to enable [IoT] market growth and will impact most, if not all, companies and markets over the next 10 to 15 years.'
GSA president, Joe Barrett, said: 'We are moving into the realm of billions of connected devices and things that will impact multiple vertical markets and change how we work and play over the next 20 years. GSA is following this technology advancement and will track and report on the deployment experiences from the broad NB-IoT ecosystem.'
NB-IoT is part of 3GPP Release-13. The Release was frozen in March 2016 although the finalization of NB-IoT has been extended due to the workload and should be completed later this month following the plenary meeting during the week of 13th June.
The report details numerous trials of NB-IoT underway around the world, suggests a number of initial use cases and provides a list of manufacturers producing NB-IoT chips, devices and modules.
