Hong Kong Telecom (HKT) has announced the launch of its new smart kiosk program, which intends to upgrade conventional phone booths across the city to high-tech kiosks. The project is a component of HKT's attempts to update its infrastructure and offer clients new services.
The HKT Smart Kiosk is a one-stop station that offers traditional payphone service, free Wi-Fi access, USB chargers, community information, news and weather; updates on transit are also provided. It was created using the winning design from a competition held by HKT and the Vocational Training Council ("VTC").
Additionally, users of the kiosk can access social welfare data through the app created by VTC students for Hong Kong Christian Service. The kiosk not only facilitates locals' integration into the neighborhood but also helps tourists find their way around the city.
Meanwhile, HKT has further extended its support to people with dementia and their caregivers. The 46 CSL Mobile retail locations will now offer Dementia's Secret Angel service, an app created in collaboration with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing to help find lost people with dementia.
The first HKT Smart Kiosk has already been installed in Causeway Bay, and the second one is likely to be launched in Central in May. From now until September 2023, the pilot program will be implemented. HKT will gather public input during this time and assess how well the Smart Kiosk is being used.
Some of the features of the HKT Smart Kiosks include a 13.3-inch touchscreen payphone that supports different e-payment options such as Tap & Go, Octopus, AlipayHK, WeChat Pay and credit cards. Users will also have access to a 43-inch touchscreen display that provides details on neighboring facilities and modes of public transit, as well as social welfare data offered by NGOs, such as details on medical services.
News and weather updates obtained from news.gov.hk and the Hong Kong Observatory will be displayed in running text. Additionally, the HKT Smart Kiosk will provide free Wi-Fi, a 75-inch digital display screen at the back of the kiosk and a USB port for unrestricted charging.
