NTT DOCOMO has partnered with NTT Corporation, Arsaga Partners, Inc. and Tokyu Land Corporation to develop groundbreaking telecommunications services utilizing NTT’s advanced all-photonics Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN).

In December 2023, NTT DOCOMO, NTT Corporation and Tokyu Land, debuted APN IOWN 1.01 at Shibuya Sakura Stage 2 as part of the Greater Shibuya project. By partnering with Arsaga Partners, the companies plan to expand telco services beyond the Greater Shibuya region by using the IOWN technology.

The initial implementation will focus on deploying APN IOWN 1.0 for a remote conferencing system called ‘Secure Hotline Powered by IOWN,’ capitalizing on the technology’s low latency and zero-jitter features, allowing users to conduct remote meetings with the same efficiency as face-to-face interactions.

The service will also take advantage of IOWN's dedicated lines for remote connection to protect the confidentiality of secret meetings including company strategy and sensitive information, resulting in a strong and secure environment.

Improving Daily Living Through Modern IOWN Technology

NTT Corporation and NTT DOCOMO believe that IOWN is an essential tool for creating an inclusive and sustainable society. The companies are committed to research and development in network and information processing infrastructure, using optical technology.

Faster and more reliable data networks can improve access to critical services, enable remote work and learning opportunities, and enhance communication and collaboration across communities.

Moreover, the emphasis on optical technology aligns with sustainability goals, as optical networks generally consume less energy compared to traditional copper-based networks. This focus supports efforts to reduce carbon footprints and mitigate environmental impact.

The current development also intends to achieve reduce large power consumption by using optoelectronic convergence devices in both network and computing. Optoelectronic convergence devices leverage the integration of various components which offer advantages such as improved energy efficiency and faster data processing. By incorporating these devices into network and computing infrastructure, there's a potential to significantly reduce power consumption while maintaining or even enhancing performance.

The four companies plan to develop next-generation products that will improve daily living through modern IOWN technology.
