The Maharashtra government has approved the establishment of Green Integrated Data Centre Parks with an expected investment of INR 1.60 lakh crore to boost the state's digital infrastructure.
This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Maharashtra will be the first state in India to introduce a special policy for Green Integrated Data Centre Parks, attracting multinational corporations and global leaders. The project aims to strengthen the state's position in the data center industry with an estimated investment of USD 20 billion.

This initiative will not only enhance Maharashtra's data infrastructure but also generate long-term revenue through taxes. It is expected to create around 500 highly skilled jobs directly and 3,000 indirect jobs, particularly in the high-tech sectors. The government highlighted the importance of addressing energy concerns in the digital era, especially with the increasing demand for data storage and processing due to artificial intelligence (AI).
The Green Integrated Data Centre Park will promote eco-friendly practices to combat global warming and support India's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2070. The special policy aims to create a favorable environment for the data center industry by attracting global companies to establish a presence in India.

To further support this initiative, the government has amended the Information Technology and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) Policy, 2023, to provide special incentives for setting up three Green Integrated Data Centre Parks.
These parks must have a minimum capacity of 500 MW each and a capital investment of at least INR 30,000 crore over a 10-year period. Incentives will be granted after a minimum investment of INR 10,000 crore in each park, with an incentive period of up to 20 years.
Once the first three Green Integrated Data Centre Parks are established in Maharashtra, the scheme will end automatically. This initiative is a significant step towards creating a sustainable, technology-driven future for the state while aligning with India's long-term environmental goals.
