Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), Ericsson, and Malaysian autonomous vehicle solutions developer, eMooVit Technology, recently demonstrated 5G use cases for an autonomous electric bus that is set to undergo a trial later this year.
The demonstration took place at eMooVit's headquarters in Cyberjaya and showcased various 5G use cases, including in-vehicle public Wi-Fi backhauled by 5G, in-vehicle CCTV, real-time telemetry data monitoring, and journey log collection.

The Future of Autonomous Public Transport in Malaysia
Future trials will explore additional use cases such as remote driving in emergencies and integrating the bus with smart city infrastructure.
Datuk Ahmad Zaki bin Zahid, DNB's Chief Strategy Officer, highlighted that once these use cases are implemented, autonomous bus rides will become safer and more reliable for passengers while also improving cost efficiency for the bus operator.
Transport Minister, Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who attended the demo, emphasized that 5G applications will enhance the implementation of autonomous public transportation in Malaysia, pending the establishment of necessary guidelines and legal frameworks.
The autonomous bus pilot project led by eMooVit will undergo a three-month test program in Putrajaya starting October 2024, during which passengers can ride for free. This project is part of a broader Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by DNB and Ericsson in May 2024 to develop 5G use cases across various enterprise sectors.
