China Unicom’s Baotou Branch and Huawei have successfully pioneered the commercial testing of the MAGICS LH long-haul microwave solution in Inner Mongolia.

The innovative microwave solution, which utilizes ultra-wideband technology, has the capacity to cover five frequency bands—L6 GHz, U6 GHz, 7 GHz, 8 GHz, and 11 GHz—using a single antenna, setting a higher benchmark in the coverage of microwave frequency bands, surpassing the range of any existing commercial product.

During the trial, a 36-kilometer microwave link was constructed, covering five frequency bands. This connection provided a data transfer rate of 10 Gbps for the 5G service backhaul between two locations, showcasing a remarkable achievement in Inner Mongolia's telecommunications infrastructure. The test exhibited stability during a two-month monitoring period, highlighting the dependability and strength of the MAGICS LH solution.

The technology offers a link bandwidth of up to 10 Gbps, which has the potential to transform microwave backhaul infrastructure by reducing hardware costs by more than 70%.

Microwave solutions have encountered challenges in the past due to the scarcity of spectrum resources available in the 6-11 GHz band. This meant that several antennas had to be installed in order to reach the needed bandwidth.

Huawei's MAGICS LH solution directly addresses this problem by integrating numerous frequency bands into a single antenna, thus, simplifying deployment, cutting costs, and enhancing efficiency.

“As a critical mobile backhaul method, microwave has always been key to improving user experience. Huawei's MAGICS LH long-haul microwave solution enhances hardware performance, reduces power consumption, and optimizes TCO, resulting in rapid and top-notch network coverage in remote areas. This development has been a boon to China Unicom's network construction efforts,” said Han Xiaodong, Deputy General Manager of China Unicom Baotou.
