During the first day of MWC Shanghai, Dr. Philip Song, Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei Carrier Business Group, spoke about the pivotal role of Open Gateway in enabling carriers to adopt experience-driven operations leveraging diverse 5G-A network capabilities.

Emphasizing Huawei's strategic vision, Dr. Song outlined how open APIs facilitate innovation and collaboration across the industry.

The “Accelerating Open Gateway in the Era of 5G-Advanced and AI Summit” at MWC Shanghai brought together telecom industry leaders to delve into the transformative potential of open application programmable interfaces (APIs) in the 5G landscape. The summit served as a platform to discuss and showcase the latest advancements and applications of 5G-Advanced (5G-A).

2024 heralds the beginning of a new era in mobile AI, driven by the commercial rollout of 5G-A and rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Dr. Song predicts significant transformations in mobile devices, content creation, and interaction methods. In response to these changes, 5G-A networks are expected to diversify their capabilities, prompting carriers to prioritize experience-focused operations.

The integration of AI intends to enhance the ability of 5G-A networks to meet these evolving demands. The foundational telecom model has already been introduced to enhance the intelligence of 5G-A networks, enabling on-demand provision of differentiated capabilities.

An Interoperable Framework

The Open Gateway initiative establishes unified standards and billing modes, fostering a global ecosystem where diverse network capabilities drive experience-driven operations. This interoperable framework allows both carrier and third-party platforms to monetize tailored packages based on user tiers, service levels, and specific scenarios. Positioned as a catalyst for 5G-A experience-oriented strategies, Open Gateway is set to define new business models across the telecom industry.

Huawei, in collaboration with carrier partners, has introduced several open API applications under the Open Gateway framework. One notable example is the service appointment API for mobile live-streaming, catering to both consumer (toC) and business (toB) segments. This API ensures live-streamers receive guaranteed service quality tailored to their individual needs, empowering carriers to differentiate their service offerings.

Another impactful feature is the New Calling API, favored by insurance companies. It integrates HD video, interactive data, content sharing, and AR capabilities into the insurance claim assessment process, reducing assessment time from 2 hours to just 10 minutes. This efficiency translates into substantial cost savings for insurers and revenue growth opportunities for carriers, and illustrates the transformative potential of Open Gateway in driving operational excellence and customer satisfaction.

Advancing APIs Through R&D

As a GSMA Open Gateway channel partner, Huawei remains committed to advancing network APIs through ongoing research and development. This includes exploring new services, enhancing existing offerings like fixed wireless access (FWA), and optimizing operational and maintenance (O&M) efficiency. These efforts aim to facilitate efficient resource scheduling, ensure differentiated service assurance, and enable intelligent O&M across networks.

Additionally, Huawei will collaborate closely with the CAMARA community to support global carriers in the strategic planning and deployment of new service APIs. Dr. Song emphasized these initiatives during his address, urging industry stakeholders worldwide to strengthen collaboration efforts. He underscored the importance of leveraging open network capabilities to drive commercial applications and enhance industry-wide innovation.

Dr. Song also highlighted Huawei's commitment to supporting carriers in developing 5G-A networks that leverage AI to create new business opportunities, enhance user experiences, and contribute to a more intelligent global ecosystem.
